Friday, May 29, 2026. Island Sky departs Tokyo and sails south across the calm waters of Suruga Bay, arriving at Shimizu Port’s Hinode Pier at 07:00. Departure is the same day at 18:00, bound for the next port of call: Naze, Amami Oshima.

While the scheduled time in port is 11 hours, factoring in disembarkation and re-boarding, you’ll realistically have around 9 to 9.5 hours to explore beyond the pier. Even so, that’s plenty of time to take in the best of Shimizu and Shizuoka — sweeping panoramas of Mount Fuji and Suruga Bay from a spectacular hilltop observatory, a nationally treasured Toshogu shrine, the UNESCO World Heritage pine grove framing Fuji’s iconic silhouette, a bowl of tuna don from one of Japan’s top tuna-landing ports, and a beloved anime-themed complex right next to the pier.

This page is your complete day guide for making the most of your May 29, 2026 port call. Fresh from Tokyo, here’s everything you need to know about what to see, what to eat, and how to spend your day in Shimizu — from a local perspective.

  10. 1. Port Day Essentials

Here’s a quick overview of the key details for your May 29, 2026 port call.

    Item Details
Port Day Friday, May 29, 2026
    Arrival 07:00
    Departure 18:00
Scheduled Time in Port Approx. 11 hours
Realistic Time Ashore Approx. 9–9.5 hours
    Berth Shimizu Port, Hinode Pier
    Previous Port Tokyo
    Next Port Naze (Amami Oshima)

May 29 falls in a pleasantly calm period after the Golden Week holiday rush (late April to early May), when crowds at tourist sites have thinned and the weather settles into a comfortable early summer rhythm. In Shizuoka, this is peak season for shincha — the first harvest of new-season green tea — and the rolling hillsides are dressed in vivid fresh green. It’s also prime time for sakura ebi (cherry blossom shrimp) fishing season (roughly March to June), and the waters around Yui Fishing Port yield some of the freshest catch of the year. As for Mount Fuji, the upper slopes still carry a dusting of late snow in late May, and on a clear day the mountain cuts a magnificent figure above the pine groves and bay.

    2. Weather & What to Wear on May 29, 2026

Late May in Shimizu is a delightful time of year — warm, fresh, and generally sunny. Daytime highs typically reach 25–27°C, with overnight lows around 19–21°C. You’ll be perfectly comfortable in short sleeves during the day, but the early morning arrival at 07:00 can feel a little cool, so bring a light layer for disembarkation. This time of year sits just before the rainy season, so occasional afternoon showers are possible — a compact folding umbrella is well worth tucking into your bag. Sunscreen and a hat are also a good idea, especially if you’re planning to walk the outdoor paths at Miho no Matsubara. Comfortable walking shoes or trainers are strongly recommended.

Please note that this article is published a few days before the port call, so a precise day-of forecast isn’t yet available. Accurate weather predictions typically become available about three days out — we recommend checking a weather app or searching “Shimizu, Shizuoka weather” on the morning of departure for an up-to-date English forecast.

    3. Getting Around from Hinode Pier

When your time ashore is limited, how you get around can make or break your day. Here are your main transport options from Shimizu Port’s Hinode Pier, starting with the most efficient.

    Taxi (Highly Recommended)

For groups, chartering a taxi is by far the best option. You set the pace, carry your bags in comfort, and go wherever you want without worrying about timetables. A 4-hour charter typically runs ¥15,000–20,000 — split between 2–4 people, that’s roughly ¥4,000–5,000 per person, which is excellent value for the convenience. English-speaking drivers are limited, but the staff at the tourist information office inside the Shimizu Port terminal can help you arrange a taxi and prepare a written note with your destinations. Google Translate’s camera and voice features also work surprisingly well for communication on the go. For Shizutetsu Taxi, call 054-285-1212.

Water Bus (Shimizu Port Water Bus)

A scenic ferry service running from Hinode Pier to Miho no Matsubara, this is a uniquely Shimizu experience — drifting across the bay with Mount Fuji in view. The boarding point is a 2–5 minute walk from S-Pulse Dream Plaza. The fare is ¥1,000 one way (¥500 for children), and the crossing takes about 35 minutes. Sailings from Hinode Pier generally run from around 09:55 to 15:55. Note that services may be cancelled in rough weather or strong winds — check the official Shimizu Port Water Bus website or the tourist information office the evening before or the morning of your visit to confirm.

    Local Bus

For Miho no Matsubara, buses depart from Shimizu Station bus terminal towards “Miho Shako” or “Miho Matsubara Iriguchi,” taking about 25 minutes for ¥470. For Nihondaira, buses run from Shizuoka Station — travel times and fares vary by route. Slower than a taxi, but a pleasant way to see local life along the way.

    On Foot

Several attractions are within easy walking distance of the pier. S-Pulse Dream Plaza is about a 5-minute walk from Hinode Pier, and Shimizu Fish Market “Kashi no Ichi” is about 15 minutes on foot. Walking is the quickest way to get started right after disembarkation.

    JR Shimizu Station

About a 15-minute walk from the pier. From here, the JR Tokaido Line takes you to Shizuoka Station in about 10 minutes (¥240). A good option if you’d like to explore central Shizuoka City, including Shizuoka oden or Toro Ruins — or to pick up a taxi heading out of the city.

    4. Recommended Full-Day Itinerary: “The Shizuoka Grand Tour (Nihondaira · Toshogu · Miho · Food)”

“With 11 hours in port — where do I even begin?” If that’s the question on your mind, this itinerary is the answer. The Shizuoka Grand Tour covers the very best of Shimizu in a single day: breathtaking views, a nationally treasured historic shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage coastal landscape, and some of the finest seafood in Japan. It’s an ambitious but very achievable day, made possible by smart use of a charter taxi. Mount Fuji, ancient history, sacred pine forests, and fresh tuna — all in one port call.

    Nihondaira & Nihondaira Yume Terrace

Perched at 307 metres above sea level, Nihondaira Yume Terrace offers what is arguably Shizuoka’s finest panorama — Mount Fuji, Suruga Bay, the Southern Alps, and Miho no Matsubara, all visible in a single sweeping 360-degree view. The wooden observation building, designed by acclaimed architect Kengo Kuma, is a work of art in itself. In late May, Fuji’s summit still wears its winter snow, making the view particularly dramatic on a clear morning. Best of all, admission is free.

    Kunozan Toshogu Shrine

Japan’s first Toshogu shrine, and the place where Tokugawa Ieyasu — the shogun who unified Japan and founded the Edo government — was first enshrined after his death. The ornately painted shrine buildings are designated National Treasures, and their elaborate beauty is genuinely breathtaking. Getting there is part of the fun: a short ropeway ride (about 5 minutes) from Nihondaira carries you over the hillside to the shrine entrance. The combined ticket for the shrine (¥700) and museum (¥600) is ¥1,200 — good value for both.

Shimizu Fish Market “Kashi no Ichi” — Maguro-kan & Ichiba-kan

Shimizu is one of Japan’s top tuna-landing ports, and Kashi no Ichi is the place to experience that firsthand. The Maguro-kan (Tuna Hall) is lined with restaurants serving freshly cut tuna don and sashimi platters. Next door, the Ichiba-kan (Market Hall) was renovated in 2025 and now offers a great range of food stalls and souvenir shops, including sakura ebi shumai and local seafood products. English menus are available at some vendors — don’t hesitate to ask.

    Miho no Matsubara

A UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, Miho no Matsubara is a 7-kilometre arc of coastline lined with some 30,000 pine trees, beyond which Mount Fuji rises magnificently from the water. Walking the “Kami no Michi” (Path of the Gods) — a pine-shaded avenue leading to the shore — you’ll feel an almost otherworldly sense of calm and reverence. At the beach end, the legendary “Hagoromo no Matsu” (Feather Robe Pine), linked to the ancient tale of a celestial maiden, is a must-see. The Miho Visitor Centre “Mihoshirube” has multilingual brochures to help you navigate the area.

    S-Pulse Dream Plaza

A waterfront shopping and entertainment complex just a short walk from the pier, S-Pulse Dream Plaza is a convenient and fun final stop. Its biggest draw for visitors is Chibi Maruko-chan Land — a themed attraction based on Japan’s beloved long-running anime series, which is set right here in Shimizu (now Shizuoka City’s Shimizu Ward). It’s a wonderfully nostalgic experience even if you’re not familiar with the series. The complex also has excellent souvenir shops stocked with Shizuoka specialties: wasabi products, sakura ebi crackers, green tea sweets, and more.

Operating Status on Friday, May 29, 2026

  • ✅ Nihondaira Yume Terrace: Open (Regular Friday hours; closed 2nd Tuesday of the month and year-end/New Year)
  • ✅ Kunozan Toshogu Shrine: Open (No regular closing days)
  • ✅ Nihondaira Ropeway: Operating (No regular closure; may suspend for strong winds or maintenance)
  • ✅ Kashi no Ichi Fish Market: Open (Closed on Wednesdays; Friday is regular business)
  • ✅ Miho no Matsubara (Mihoshirube Visitor Centre): Open (09:00–16:30)
  • ✅ S-Pulse Dream Plaza: Open (Shops 10:00–20:00; Restaurants 11:00–21:00)

The post-Golden Week lull means the main tourist sites should be comfortably uncrowded during the day. Being a Friday, local traffic does pick up towards evening, particularly in car parks — but since this itinerary keeps you moving through the morning and afternoon, you’ll be well ahead of the crowds for all the key stops.

6. Must-Try Food & Drink in Shimizu and Shizuoka

Shimizu and Shizuoka are among Japan’s most rewarding destinations for food lovers. Here’s what to seek out during your port day.

Dish Where to Find It Price Range Notes
Tuna don / tuna sashimi Kashi no Ichi — Maguro-kan ¥1,000–2,500 Fresh from one of Japan’s top tuna ports. English menus available
Shimizu sushi (tuna & sakura ebi) Shimizu Sushi Yokocho (Dream Plaza) ¥1,500–4,000 5-minute walk from the pier. Card payments accepted
Sakura ebi kakiage (spring only) Yui Fishing Port area ¥800–1,500 Peak spring fishing season. Fresh (raw) sakura ebi is spring-only. Cash only
Shizuoka oden Aoba Yokocho (Shizuoka City) ¥500–1,500 Dark fishcake + dashi powder — Shizuoka’s beloved street food classic
Seafood don / sakura ebi shumai Kashi no Ichi — Ichiba-kan ¥500–2,000 Renovated in 2025. Takeaway options available
Wasabi sweets / wasabi pickles Various spots around Shimizu Port ¥300–3,000 Shizuoka is Japan’s top wasabi producer. Great for souvenirs
New-season green tea sweets / deep-steamed tea Various spots in Shimizu & Shizuoka City ¥300–1,500 May is peak shincha (new tea) season — try the real thing

One ingredient truly worth going out of your way for in late May: sakura ebi (cherry blossom shrimp). Found only in Suruga Bay, these delicate pink shrimp are harvested just twice a year — during the spring season (roughly March to June) and the autumn season (October to December). Late May is the height of the spring fishing season, meaning the Yui Fishing Port area is serving shrimp that were caught just hours earlier. Eaten raw, they’re an almost ethereal treat — translucent pale pink, with a sweet, clean flavour of the sea. Lightly battered and fried as kakiage tempura, they’re equally wonderful: crisp, fragrant, and full of umami. Yui is about 25 minutes from the pier by taxi. If you can’t make it out that far, both Kashi no Ichi (Ichiba-kan) and S-Pulse Dream Plaza carry sakura ebi dishes and products. Don’t leave Shimizu without trying them.

7. Practical Tips for a Smooth Day Ashore

Wi-Fi

  • Shimizu Port Terminal: Free Wi-Fi is available inside the passenger terminal. Worth connecting the moment you step off the ship.
  • S-Pulse Dream Plaza: Free Wi-Fi throughout the complex.
  • Convenience stores (7-Eleven, Lawson, FamilyMart): All offer free Wi-Fi under a nationwide shared network. Several stores are located near Shimizu Station and the port area.
  • For travellers who need a reliable connection throughout the day, a prepaid SIM purchased at the airport before arrival is a worthwhile investment.

Paying for Things

Cash is still king at many establishments in Japan — particularly smaller restaurants, taxis, and vendors around Yui Fishing Port. Larger outlets at S-Pulse Dream Plaza and Kashi no Ichi generally accept credit cards; Visa and Mastercard are the most widely accepted (Amex and Diners are not always available). The 7-Bank ATM inside the 7-Eleven convenience store near the port accepts international cards for cash withdrawals. We recommend having ¥3,000–10,000 in cash per person to cover the day without any payment worries.

IC Transit Cards

Local buses and JR trains in the Shimizu area accept Suica, ICOCA, and other Japanese IC transit cards. These can be purchased at JR Shimizu Station’s ticket machines or at nearby convenience stores. Cash fares are also accepted, but note that buses may not give change, so having the right coins or an IC card makes things much easier.

Language Support

  • Tourist Information Office (Shimizu Port Terminal): English-speaking staff are on hand. They can help with taxi arrangements, maps, and general sightseeing advice — right as you step ashore.
  • S-Pulse Dream Plaza / Kashi no Ichi: Some shops and restaurants have English menus and English-speaking staff.
  • Miho no Matsubara — “Mihoshirube” Visitor Centre: Multilingual brochures (including English and Chinese) are available.
  • Most taxi drivers speak Japanese only, but Google Translate’s voice and camera functions work very well in practice. Writing down your destination in Japanese in advance, or showing the driver a map on your phone, will get you where you need to go without any fuss.

Tourist Information Offices

  • Shimizu Port Passenger Terminal — Available immediately upon disembarkation. English assistance available. Taxi arrangement, maps, and general sightseeing queries.
  • Shimizu Station Tourist Information — About a 15-minute walk from the pier, inside JR Shimizu Station. Covers broader city and regional sightseeing information.

8. Getting Back to the Ship

Departure is at 18:00. Please aim to be back at Shimizu Port’s Hinode Pier by 17:30 to allow time for boarding procedures. Unexpected traffic or transit delays can happen, especially during the early evening rush around Shimizu Station. We strongly recommend wrapping up your sightseeing by 16:30–17:00 and making your way back to the ship from there.

If you’re unsure how to get back to the pier, search “Shimizu Port Hinode Pier” or “清水港 日の出埠頭” on Google Maps for step-by-step directions from your current location. When taking a taxi, tell the driver “Hinode Pier” or show them the Japanese text “清水港 日の出埠頭” on your phone screen. Local drivers in the Shimizu area are very familiar with cruise ship passengers, so you’ll be in good hands.

9. About Island Sky

Island Sky is a compact expedition cruise ship of 4,280 gross tonnes, operated by Noble Caledonia. A world away from large ocean liners, she is purpose-built for small-group expedition voyaging — carrying around 100 passengers and able to call at intimate ports and anchorages that larger ships simply cannot reach. Her stop at Shimizu is very much in keeping with that spirit.

On board, the generous ratio of space to passengers means comfortable lounges, attentive dining, and room to truly unwind. True to the expedition cruise philosophy, each port of call is enriched by expert lectures and cultural and natural history presentations that deepen your understanding of the places you visit. The atmosphere is warm and personal — staff and guests tend to know each other by name within days. And as Island Sky eases away from Shimizu’s Hinode Pier with Mount Fuji reflected in the evening waters of Suruga Bay, the view from the deck will be one to remember.

From the energy of Tokyo’s great metropolis to the blue waters and majestic mountain of Shimizu — and onward to the subtropical wilderness of Naze on Amami Oshima. Island Sky’s itinerary captures Japan in all its extraordinary variety. We hope your May 29, 2026 port day in Shimizu turns out to be one of the highlights of your voyage. With warm wishes from your local friends here in Shimizu —

良い旅を。Have a wonderful voyage.
