On paper you have 8 hours and 30 minutes in port, but once you factor in disembarkation and the return to the ship, roughly 7 hours ashore is a realistic figure. Even so, that’s plenty of time to enjoy the best of Shimizu and Shizuoka in a single day — Kunozan Toshogu Shrine with its National Treasure hall, the Toro Ruins where life 2,000 years ago has been reconstructed, the Kashi-no-Ichi fish market where Shimizu’s tuna lands, and S-Pulse Dream Plaza right beside the pier.

In early September, Shimizu may be “autumn” by the calendar, but it still feels like an extension of summer. Days are hot and humid, and rain clouds tend to build up in the afternoon.

On the other hand, this is also the season when the air clears after a typhoon or weather front passes through, and a day with a crisp, sharply visible Mt. Fuji can arrive out of nowhere.

Since it’s a Friday weekday, both the sightseeing spots and the market should be relatively calm. With the summer holidays just over, the crowds at Kashi-no-Ichi and Dream Plaza feel very different from August. It should be a comfortable day for strolling.

2. Weather and What to Wear on September 4, 2026

The current forecast for Shimizu on your port day is showers. Highs will be around 29.3℃ (85°F), lows around 24.0℃ (75°F), with a fairly high 88% chance of rain.

If you’re not used to Celsius, use these as a guide: 25℃ = 77°F, 30℃ = 86°F, 35℃ = 95°F.

An 88% chance of rain means you should assume it will rain at some point during the day. Bring a folding umbrella or rain jacket when you go ashore. Japanese convenience stores sell clear plastic umbrellas for a few hundred yen, so if you’d rather travel light, buying one locally works fine too.

The temperature itself is only in the 29℃ range, but rainy days in Shizuoka are very humid, and you’ll work up a sweat while walking. Quick-drying clothing plus a light layer for air-conditioned indoor spaces will keep you comfortable. For footwear, choose shoes with good grip on wet stone paving and shrine approach steps.

3. Getting from Shimizu Port into Town and to the Sights

There are six main ways to get from Shimizu Port into the city and out to the sights. Below is a breakdown of fares, payment methods, and frequency for each.

If you want maximum freedom with your limited hours in port, a taxi is your best bet. Especially on a day like this with rain in the forecast, traveling under a roof saves a lot of energy.

🚕 Taxi (the most flexible option — recommended)

The biggest advantage is being able to cover places that are hard to reach by public transport, such as Nihondaira and Kunozan Toshogu, all in one trip. Split among a group, the per-person cost is more reasonable than you might expect.

• 【Where to board】Taxis line up at Hinode Pier to meet arriving cruise ships. If you don’t see any, staff at the tourist information desk in the port terminal can call one for you (Shizutetsu Taxi dispatch center: 054-281-5111)
• 【How fares work】Metered. The base fare is ¥700 (up to 1.17 km), then ¥100 for every additional 285 m. Time also accrues while waiting at lights or in traffic. It’s perfectly acceptable to ask “About how much to ◯◯?” before you get in
• 【Chartering by the hour】Hourly charter is ¥7,700 per hour for a standard car. Sightseeing taxi plans (Shizutetsu Taxi) start at ¥30,800 for 4 hours — with four passengers, that’s about ¥7,700 each. Show the driver your list of destinations and work out the route together
• 【Payment】Cash and credit cards are reliably accepted. Support for IC transit cards and QR payments varies by vehicle, so check before boarding if you plan to use them. No tipping required
• 【Language】Most drivers speak Japanese only, but showing the spot names from this article (with Japanese script) on your phone works perfectly well

On rainy days, waiting taxis can be taken early. Since this is also the transport used in our model route, head straight for the taxi stand after disembarking.

🚌 Free Shuttle Buses (linking the port and Shimizu Station — a surprisingly little-known ally)

There are two kinds of free buses at Shimizu Port. They depart from different places, so it helps to know the difference.

① S-Pulse Dream Plaza Free Shuttle (year-round, open to everyone)

Connects Dream Plaza – Shin-Shimizu Station (Shizutetsu) – JR Shimizu Station Minato Exit in about 8 minutes. The stop is not at Hinode Pier but at Dream Plaza, right next door to the pier.

• 【Fare】Free. You don’t need to be a shopper to ride
• 【Frequency】Every 30 minutes on weekdays (departing Dream Plaza at :00 and :30), every 15 minutes on weekends and holidays (:00, :15, :30, :45)
• 【First and last runs】From Dream Plaza: first at 10:00, last at 22:20. From JR Shimizu Station Minato Exit: first at 9:45
• 【Note】It does not run before 10:00 a.m. On early-arrival days, take a taxi or walk for your first move of the morning
• 【Best for】Heading to JR Shimizu Station or Shin-Shimizu Station. It shortcuts a walk of 20 minutes or more

September 4 is a Friday, so the weekday timetable applies: every 30 minutes. Since you may be waiting in the rain, check the times before heading to the stop.

② Port-Day-Only Free Shuttle for Cruise Passengers (arranged by the cruise line)

On port days, a free bus sometimes runs from right in front of Hinode Pier to Shin-Shimizu Station and JR Shimizu Station. The key difference from ① is that you can board immediately after stepping off the ship.

• During the Celebrity Millennium call on August 16, 2026, Ihara Kanko Bus operated a service linking Hinode Pier – Shin-Shimizu Station – JR Shimizu Station (confirmed on site by our team)
• Whether it runs, plus times and destinations, varies by port call. Check the onboard announcements or ask pier staff after disembarking
• How to tell them apart: ① is a red bus marked “S-PULSE DREAM PLAZA”; ② is a chartered vehicle used only on port days

⛴ Water Bus (travel with Mt. Fuji views from the water)

A small boat linking Hinode Pier (in front of Dream Plaza) with the Miho area and Ejiri (near Kashi-no-Ichi). The ride itself is a Shimizu Port sightseeing experience.

• 【How fares work】A flat ¥1,000 for adults and ¥500 for elementary school children per leg. Hinode to Miho takes about 15 minutes; Hinode to Ejiri about 10 minutes
• 【Frequency】7 sailings per day. No reservations — boarding is first come, first served
• 【Tickets】Purchase at the boarding point
• 【Cancellations】Since it operates within the harbor, cancellations are rare, but service may be suspended in typhoons or other severe weather. Check the day’s operations at the pier or by phone (054-353-2222)

The forecast calls for an 88% chance of rain. Heavy rain or wind can affect operations, so if you’re planning to ride, check at the pier in the morning.

🚏 Local Buses (the standard way to Miho — Shizutetsu Just Line)

To reach Miho no Matsubara by public transport, take the “Miho Yamanote Line.” From Shimizu Station to Miho Matsubara Iriguchi is ¥440 and about 25 minutes.

• 【Frequency】Roughly 3–4 buses per hour during the day
• 【How to ride】Board through the rear door and pay at the fare box at the front when you get off. With Suica, ICOCA, or other nationally compatible IC cards, just tap on boarding and again on exiting
• 【Paying cash】The onboard change machine accepts coins and ¥1,000 notes only. If you only have larger bills, break them at a convenience store before boarding
• 【Note】You’ll need the free shuttle bus or a walk to get from the port to the Shimizu Station bus terminal

🚃 Trains (to central Shizuoka City)

Your option for venturing to the Shizuoka Station area, home to Aoba Yokocho’s Shizuoka oden and Sunpu Castle Park.

• 【JR Tokaido Line】Shimizu Station to Shizuoka Station: ¥240, about 12 minutes. Around 3–4 trains per hour during the day
• 【Shizuoka Railway (Shizutetsu)】Shin-Shimizu Station to Shin-Shizuoka Station: ¥350, about 23 minutes. Trains run roughly every 8 minutes, so there’s no need to consult a timetable
• 【Payment】Both accept Suica, ICOCA, and other IC transit cards. Contactless credit card tap-to-ride is not supported, so use an IC card or buy a paper ticket with cash
• 【From port to station】The free shuttle bus is the easiest way to reach Shimizu Station or Shin-Shimizu Station

On rainy days, trains are comfortable since you’re under cover at the station and on board.

🚶 On Foot (perfectly fine for the port area)

• S-Pulse Dream Plaza: right next to the pier (1–3 minutes on foot)
• Shimizu Fish Market “Kashi-no-Ichi”: about 1.3 km, 15–20 minutes on foot. Or take the water bus from Hinode to Ejiri (about 10 minutes) and Kashi-no-Ichi is right in front of you when you land
• JR Shimizu Station: about 1.5 km, 20–25 minutes on foot. The free shuttle bus is recommended
• Shin-Shimizu Station (Shizutetsu): about 1 km, around 15 minutes on foot

4. Recommended Itinerary: “Rain-Proof Shizuoka Indoor Tour”

If you’re torn between a ship-organized excursion, a local tour, or going independently, start with our Shimizu Shore Excursions Compared, which lays out costs and who each option suits.

“Rain is forecast — what should I see in seven hours?”

This route is the answer. Kunozan Toshogu with its National Treasure hall, the Toro Ruins reconstructing a 2,000-year-old village, the covered Kashi-no-Ichi market, and S-Pulse Dream Plaza right by the pier. All four work just fine in the rain.

The key is the order. You knock out Kunozan and Toro to the south first, then loop back to the Shimizu port area — a single continuous line. Since you’re not shuttling back and forth between the port and distant spots, travel stress stays low even in wet weather.

Sharing a taxi among four people brings the per-person cost down considerably. Booking an hourly charter (¥7,700 per hour) for about four hours is also a practical choice on a rainy day.

Kunozan Toshogu Shrine

Japan’s oldest Toshogu shrine, dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu. The main hall is a National Treasure covered in brilliantly colored carvings. The buildings are roofed, so rain won’t get in the way of your visit.

Getting there is a highlight in itself: a ropeway from Nihondaira that hops straight across the valley, with green slopes below and views of Suruga Bay on a clear day. Admission is ¥700 for the shrine, ¥600 for the museum, or ¥1,200 for a combined ticket. Open 9:00–17:00, year-round.

Toro Ruins & Toro Museum

A nationally designated Special Historic Site where a Yayoi-period village has been reconstructed. Pit dwellings, raised-floor storehouses, and paddy fields are recreated outdoors, letting you see the beginnings of rice cultivation in Japan with your own eyes.

Even in the rain, the museum building is a comfortable place to spend time. The second-floor permanent exhibition (¥300 for adults) displays excavated wooden farming tools, while the first floor is a free hands-on zone. Open 9:00–16:30, closed Mondays.

Shimizu Fish Market “Kashi-no-Ichi”

Shimizu’s fish market opened up to the general public, split into two buildings: “Maguro-kan,” packed with tuna restaurants, and “Ichiba-kan,” lined with fresh seafood and souvenirs.

Shimizu is one of Japan’s leading ports for frozen tuna landings. Eating a tuna rice bowl right where it all comes ashore feels like the quintessential local experience. Ichiba-kan is open 9:30–17:30; hours at Maguro-kan’s restaurants vary by shop, and some close around 3:00 p.m. Arriving at 14:30, you may find some places have stopped taking orders, so look for one that’s still serving as soon as you get there.

S-Pulse Dream Plaza

A complex of about 60 shops right beside the pier. Being indoors, it’s the perfect fallback when rain scuttles your plans.

Inside you’ll find Chibi Maruko-chan Land (¥1,200 for adults, ¥700 for ages 3 through elementary school), Shimizu Sushi Yokocho with its lineup of sushi restaurants, and the Shimizu Sushi Museum. On the roof, the Dream Sky Ferris wheel stands 52 m tall, takes about 13 minutes per rotation, and costs ¥700. When it’s not raining, it’s a great way to get your bearings around the port and town, but it closes in strong winds.

As an early-September weekday with no major holiday overlap, heavy crowds aren’t expected. That said, people do gather at Dream Plaza when it rains, and Sushi Yokocho can involve a wait at lunchtime.

An event where you can watch geigi (geisha) dance performances at Shizuoka’s traditional restaurants during daytime hours. Venues include Fugetsuro and other ryotei in Shizuoka City, mostly around Shizuoka Station, about 20 minutes by train from Shimizu. Dates differ by venue, so check the official website to see whether one falls on your port day.

6. Local Food in Shimizu and Shizuoka

The Shimizu and Shizuoka area is one of Japan’s great food destinations. Here are the specialties worth trying on your day in port.

One thing I especially want to mention is *nama shirasu* (raw whitebait), a Suruga Bay delicacy you may be lucky enough to come across at this time of year.

Shirasu are the juveniles of Japanese anchovy caught in Suruga Bay. Because they spoil quickly, they can only be eaten raw near the port where they’re landed. A bowl of translucent raw shirasu over rice is a privilege of fishing towns like Shimizu, Yui, and Mochimune.

Fishing can be canceled depending on sea conditions that day, so treat it as a happy bonus if it’s available. You may find it at the restaurants in Kashi-no-Ichi or the sushi shops in Dream Plaza. Boiled shirasu is generally easier to find and has its own plump, gentle sweetness.

Note that the autumn sakura shrimp season typically starts in October. In early September, it’s mostly served dried or as kakiage fritters.

7. Practical Information for a Worry-Free Day

Wi-Fi

• Shimizu Port Terminal: Free Wi-Fi available (inside the terminal)
• S-Pulse Dream Plaza: Free Wi-Fi available
• Convenience stores (7-Eleven, Lawson, FamilyMart): Nationwide free Wi-Fi available
• SIM cards: Buying a prepaid SIM at the airport is recommended

Payment Methods

Cash is still the default at many businesses in Japan, and small restaurants and taxis may not accept anything else.

Larger shops at S-Pulse Dream Plaza and Kashi-no-Ichi accept credit cards. Visa and Mastercard are the most widely accepted; Amex and Diners may be declined at some places.

Near the port, you can withdraw cash from Seven Bank ATMs inside convenience stores. As a guide, carrying ¥3,000–10,000 in cash per person per day should cover you.

IC Transit Cards

Suica, ICOCA, and other IC transit cards work on buses and trains. You can buy one at convenience stores near the port or at Shimizu Station.

Cash is also accepted, but change isn’t always given, so keep coins handy.

8. Returning to the Ship

Diamond Princess departs at 18:00. Plan to be back at Hinode Pier by 17:30, thirty minutes before departure, and give yourself extra margin.

Roads get congested in the rain, and taxis become harder to catch. Spending your final hour in the port area (around Dream Plaza) makes your return much more predictable.

When searching on Google Maps, use “Shimizu Port Hinode Pier” or “清水港 日の出埠頭”.

9. About Diamond Princess

Diamond Princess is a 115,906-ton cruise ship operated by Princess Cruises. Launched in 2004, she measures 290 m in length and has a passenger capacity of 2,706. She was built at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ Nagasaki Shipyard and was, at the time of her debut, the largest cruise ship ever constructed in Japan.
