A free loop bus run by S-Pulse Dream Plaza connects Dream Plaza, Shizutetsu Shin-Shimizu Station, and the Minato Exit of JR Shimizu Station in about 10 minutes. On a Saturday call like today’s, the Dream Plaza area bustles with shoppers, but the stop is right next to the wharf and easy to find.

Nihondaira & Nihondaira Yume Terrace

Perched 307 meters above sea level, Nihondaira offers one of Japan’s most rewarding panoramas — Mount Fuji, Suruga Bay, the Southern Alps, the Izu Peninsula, Shimizu Port, and Miho no Matsubara all visible from a single viewpoint. The “Yume Terrace” observation facility, completed in 2018 and designed by acclaimed architect Kengo Kuma, is a beautiful structure in its own right. Early morning — especially on a clear summer day — is the best time to see Mount Fuji before the clouds roll in, making the 08:00 arrival on this itinerary ideal. Best of all, admission and parking are free.

Kunozan Toshogu

Built before the more famous Nikko Toshogu, Kunozan Toshogu is Japan’s oldest Toshogu shrine, dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu — the founder of the Edo Shogunate. The brilliantly lacquered shrine buildings are designated National Treasures, and their vivid reds, golds, and blues are genuinely breathtaking. The short ropeway ride from Nihondaira adds a fun aerial perspective over Suruga Bay and the Shimizu cityscape below. A combined ticket for the main shrine (¥700) and museum (¥600) is available for ¥1,200. Note that the 1,159 stone steps leading up from the sea side are steep — the ropeway approach is much easier and the view from it is a highlight in itself.

Shimizu Fish Market “Kashi no Ichi” — Maguro-kan

Shimizu is one of Japan’s top tuna-landing ports, and Kashi no Ichi’s Maguro-kan (Tuna Hall) is the best place to experience that firsthand. Several restaurants line the hall, serving up fresh tuna sashimi, tuna rice bowls, tekka-don, and more. The adjacent Ichiba-kan marketplace is great for local produce and Shizuoka souvenirs, meaning you can handle lunch and gift shopping in one stop. Saturday crowds can be significant, so aim to arrive by 11:30 at the latest to avoid the worst of the lunchtime rush.

Miho no Matsubara

A sweeping coastline blanketed by around 30,000 pine trees, with the majestic form of Mount Fuji rising beyond — this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of Japan’s most iconic views. Walking the “Path of the Gods” (Kaminomichi), a serene pine-lined avenue leading to the shore, feels like stepping into another world. At its heart stands the Hagoromo Pine, a sacred tree tied to the legend of a celestial maiden who left her feathered robe here. The visitor center “Mihoshirube” offers multilingual pamphlets and helpful staff.

Espal Dream Plaza

Right next to the cruise pier, Dream Plaza is the perfect final stop before heading back to the ship. Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi is available inside the Shimizu Port passenger terminal from the moment you step off the ship, and also throughout Espal Dream Plaza. Major convenience store chains (7-Eleven, Lawson, FamilyMart) offer free Wi-Fi nationwide and are handy backup options. For a reliable connection throughout the day, consider picking up a prepaid SIM card at the airport upon arrival in Japan.

Payment

Cash is still king in Japan, particularly at smaller local restaurants, taxis, and market stalls. Come prepared with enough Japanese yen to cover your day comfortably. Major tenants at Dream Plaza and Kashi no Ichi generally accept credit cards — Visa and Mastercard are the most widely accepted. American Express and Diners Club are not accepted everywhere, so don’t rely on them. For cash withdrawals, 7-Bank ATMs inside 7-Eleven stores (near JR Shimizu Station) accept international cards. A rough budget of ¥3,000–¥10,000 in cash per person should see you through the day.

IC Transit Cards

Both local buses and JR trains accept IC cards (Suica, ICOCA, etc.). If you already have a Suica, it works throughout the Shimizu area. If you don’t have one, they’re available at Shimizu Station’s ticket machines and at convenience stores. You can also pay with cash on buses, but be aware that buses often don’t give change — having coins ready (especially ¥500 and ¥100 pieces) will make boarding much smoother.

Language Support

English-speaking staff can be found at the tourist information center inside the Shimizu Port passenger terminal, at Espal Dream Plaza, and at the Miho no Matsubara visitor center (Mihoshirube). Nihondaira Yume Terrace and Kunozan Toshogu both have English-language materials available. Taxis are generally Japanese-speaking only, but showing your destination on a map app or using Google Translate works perfectly well — drivers are well used to communicating this way with international visitors. The camera translation feature in Google Translate is especially useful for reading menus and signs on the go.

8. Getting Back to the Ship

Celebrity Millennium departs at 18:00. We strongly recommend being back at Hinode Pier by 17:00 — one hour before departure — to allow time for re-boarding procedures. Always check the specific all-aboard time communicated by the ship’s crew, and plan your day around that deadline.

If you’re unsure how to get back to the pier, search “Shimizu Port Hinode Pier” or 「清水港日の出埠頭」 on Google Maps for directions from your current location. If taking a taxi, simply tell the driver “Hinode Pier, Shimizu Port” (日の出埠頭) — most drivers are familiar with the cruise ship berth. If you end your day at Dream Plaza as suggested in our itinerary, you’re just a 5-minute walk from the pier, making the return journey effortless.
