The scheduled time in port is 7 hours 30 minutes, but once you factor in disembarkation and the return to the ship, roughly 6 hours is a realistic figure for time actually spent ashore.
Even so, that’s plenty of time to enjoy the best of Shimizu and Shizuoka — Kunozan Toshogu Shrine with its National Treasure main hall, Nihondaira Yume Terrace overlooking Mt. Fuji and Suruga Bay, and S-PULSE DREAM PLAZA right next to the pier.

In Japan, late August is generally thought of as the tail end of the school summer holidays.
The beach crowds have thinned out, and the city is gradually shifting into autumn. Shimizu’s great summer tradition, the Shimizu Minato Festival, wraps up between late July and early August, so you’ll be walking through a calm, relaxed port town.
One more thing to keep in mind: this is a Monday.
Many museums in Shizuoka and Shimizu close on Mondays — the Toro Museum and the Verkehr Museum are both shut that day. Keep this in the back of your mind when planning where to go.
2. Weather and What to Wear on August 31, 2026
The forecast for your port day calls for moderate drizzle. The high is 30.1℃ (86°F), the low 25.3℃ (78°F), with a 57% chance of rain.
If you’re not used to Celsius, use these as a guide: 25℃ = 77°F, 30℃ = 86°F, 35℃ = 95°F.
Expect a damp, humid, muggy day. With rain chances above 50%, be sure to bring a folding umbrella or a rain jacket.
Summer rain in Japan doesn’t bring the temperature down, so you’ll still work up a sweat even under an umbrella. Wear quick-drying clothing and drink water regularly — cold drinks are easy to find at convenience stores and vending machines near the port.
It’s safest to build your day around covered or indoor locations. If the rain picks up, duck into S-PULSE DREAM PLAZA, a five-minute walk from the pier, where you can eat and shop all under one roof.

3. Getting from Shimizu Port into the City and Beyond
There are six ways to get around from Shimizu Port: taxi, free shuttle bus, water bus, local bus, train, and on foot. Here’s a breakdown of fares, payment methods, and frequency for each.
With an afternoon arrival and rain in the forecast, a taxi is the best choice if you want full control over your limited time ashore.
🚕 Taxi (the most flexible option — recommended)
The big advantage is being able to cover places that are hard to reach by public transport, such as Nihondaira and Kunozan Toshogu, in one smooth loop. Split among a group, the per-person cost is more reasonable than you might expect.
On a rainy day you can go door to door with no waiting, which is why our model route below uses taxis.

- 【How fares work】Metered. The base fare is ¥700 (up to 1.17 km), then ¥100 for each additional 285 m. Time charges also apply at red lights and in traffic. It’s perfectly acceptable to ask “About how much to ○○?” before you get in
- 【Chartering by the hour】Hourly charter is ¥7,700 per hour for a standard car. Sightseeing taxi plans (Shizutetsu Taxi) start at ¥30,800 for 4 hours — about ¥7,700 per person with four people. Show the driver your list of destinations and plan the route together
- 【Payment】Cash and credit cards are your safest bet. IC transit cards and QR payments vary by vehicle, so check before boarding if you plan to use them. No tipping required

🚌 Free Shuttle Bus (linking the port and Shimizu Station — an underrated ally)
There are two kinds of free buses at Shimizu Port. They depart from different stops, so it helps to know the difference.
① S-PULSE DREAM PLAZA Free Shuttle Bus (year-round, open to everyone)
Connects Dream Plaza — Shin-Shimizu Station (Shizutetsu) — JR Shimizu Station Minato Exit in about 8 minutes. The stop is not at Hinode Pier itself but at Dream Plaza, right next door.

- 【Frequency】Every 30 minutes on weekdays (departing Dream Plaza at :00 and :30), every 15 minutes on weekends and holidays (:00, :15, :30, :45)

- 【Note】It does not run before 10:00 a.m. On early-arrival days, use a taxi or walk for your first move of the morning

Since August 31 is a Monday, the bus will run every 30 minutes.
② Cruise-Day-Only Free Shuttle for Passengers (arranged by the cruise line)
On port call days, a free bus sometimes runs right from in front of Hinode Pier to Shin-Shimizu Station and JR Shimizu Station. The key difference from ① is that you can board the moment you step off the ship.
- During the Celebrity Millennium’s call on August 16, 2026, Ihara Kanko Bus operated a service linking Hinode Pier, Shin-Shimizu Station, and JR Shimizu Station (confirmed on site by our team)
- Whether it runs, and its times and destinations, differ with every port call. Check the onboard announcements or ask pier staff after disembarking
- How to tell them apart: ① is a red bus marked “S-PULSE DREAM PLAZA”; ② is a chartered coach running only on cruise days
⛴ Water Bus (travel with Mt. Fuji views from the water)
A small boat linking Hinode Pier (in front of Dream Plaza) with the Miho area and Ejiri (near Kashi-no-Ichi fish market). The ride itself is a sightseeing experience.
- 【How fares work】A flat ¥1,000 for adults and ¥500 for elementary school children per leg. Hinode to Miho takes about 15 minutes; Hinode to Ejiri about 10 minutes
- 【Frequency】Seven sailings a day. No reservations — first come, first served

With a 13:30 arrival and the last departure from Hinode at 16:35, your options after disembarking are limited — and visibility won’t be great in the rain. If you plan to ride, be sure to confirm the day’s operating status at the boarding point.
🚏 Local Bus (the standard way to Miho — Shizutetsu Just Line)
To reach Miho no Matsubara by public transport, take the Miho Yamanote Line. From Shimizu Station to Miho Matsubara Iriguchi is ¥440 and about 25 minutes.

- 【How to ride】Board through the rear door and pay at the fare box by the driver when you get off. With Suica, ICOCA, or other nationally compatible IC cards, just tap on boarding and again when you exit
- 【Paying cash】The onboard change machine accepts coins and ¥1,000 notes only. If you only have larger bills, break them at a convenience store before boarding
- 【Note】You’ll need the free shuttle bus or a walk to get from the port to the Shimizu Station bus terminal
🚃 Train (to central Shizuoka City)
Your option if you want to venture out to the Shizuoka Station area, home to Aoba Yokocho’s Shizuoka oden alley and Sunpu Castle Park.
- 【JR Tokaido Line】Shimizu to Shizuoka: ¥240, about 12 minutes, with 3–4 trains per hour during the day
- 【Shizuoka Railway (Shizutetsu)】Shin-Shimizu to Shin-Shizuoka: ¥350, about 23 minutes. Trains run roughly every 8 minutes, so there’s no need to check a timetable
- 【Payment】Both accept Suica, ICOCA, and other IC transit cards. Contactless credit card tap-to-ride is not supported, so use an IC card or buy a paper ticket with cash
- 【From the port to the stations】The free shuttle bus is the easiest way to reach Shimizu Station or Shin-Shimizu Station
On a rainy day the walk to the station isn’t sheltered, so taking the shuttle bus or a taxi is far more comfortable.
🚶 On Foot (fine for the area right around the port)
- S-PULSE DREAM PLAZA: right next to the pier (1–3 minutes)
- Shimizu Fish Market “Kashi-no-Ichi”: about 1.3 km, 15–20 minutes. Or take the water bus from Hinode to Ejiri (about 10 minutes) and it’s right in front of you when you land
- JR Shimizu Station: about 1.5 km, 20–25 minutes. The free shuttle bus is recommended
- Shin-Shimizu Station (Shizutetsu): about 1 km, around 15 minutes

4. Recommended Model Route: “Summer Afternoon Half-Day — National Treasures and the Port at Night”
If you’re weighing a ship’s excursion against a local tour or going independently, start with our Shimizu Shore Excursions Compared, which lays out costs and who each option suits.
“We arrive in the afternoon, and rain is forecast. What can we actually see in six hours?”
This route is our answer. In the first half, take a taxi straight up to the Nihondaira and Kunozan area to the south, covering the National Treasure shrine and the observation facility in one go. In the second half, head back to the port for dinner and shopping at S-PULSE DREAM PLAZA, right beside the pier.
The main hall of Kunozan Toshogu is roofed and Nihondaira Yume Terrace is an indoor observatory, so rain is unlikely to spoil either stop.
Because it’s a one-way itinerary with no back-and-forth between the port and distant spots, you’ll finish just a five-minute walk from your ship.

Kunozan Toshogu Shrine
The very first Toshogu shrine built in Japan, dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu. The main hall is a designated National Treasure, and its black lacquer and brilliantly colored carvings take on even deeper hues in the rain.
Admission is ¥700 for the shrine, ¥600 for the museum, or ¥1,200 for a combined ticket. The museum presents historical materials connected with the Tokugawa family. It’s about 5 minutes by ropeway from Nihondaira, and the aerial crossing above Suruga Bay is a highlight in itself.

Nihondaira Yume Terrace
An observation facility atop a 307-meter summit. Its timber-lattice building is fully roofed, so you can take in the view without getting wet.
On clear days you get a 360-degree panorama of Mt. Fuji, Suruga Bay, the Southern Alps, and Miho no Matsubara — though clouds are likely on this day. Even so, the sight of Shimizu Port below and the rain falling into Suruga Bay is something you can only see from here. Admission is free.
S-PULSE DREAM PLAZA
A shopping and entertainment complex with around 60 tenants, right next to Hinode Pier. Shops stay open until 20:00 and restaurants until 21:00, making it an ideal finish to an evening-departure day.
Inside you’ll find Shimizu Sushi Yokocho, Chibi Maruko-chan Land, and the Shimizu Sushi Museum. Show a receipt from Sushi Yokocho at the Sushi Museum and admission is half price. It’s all indoors, so rain is no concern.
Dream Sky Ferris Wheel (if you have time)
A 52-meter Ferris wheel at Dream Plaza. One rotation takes about 13 minutes and costs ¥700.
From April to October it runs until 21:00. Looking down on Shimizu Port at night — and on the lights of your own ship — is a perfect way to close out your day in port. It shuts down in strong winds.
Opening Status on Monday, August 31, 2026
- Kunozan Toshogu Shrine: Open (9:00–17:00, no closing days). Check the ropeway’s last departure time when you board
- Nihondaira Yume Terrace: Open (9:00–17:00 Mon–Fri; closed on the second Tuesday, so it is open on August 31)
- S-PULSE DREAM PLAZA: Open (shops 10:00–20:00 / restaurants 11:00–21:00)
- Chibi Maruko-chan Land: Open (10:00–20:00, last entry 19:30, open year-round)
- Shimizu Fish Market “Kashi-no-Ichi”: Open (closed Wednesdays, so Monday is fine, but the Ichiba-kan building closes at 17:30. Most eateries in the Maguro-kan building close around 15:00, which is too tight with a 13:30 arrival, so we’ve left it out of the route)
- Toro Ruins & Toro Museum: Museum closed Mondays. The archaeological park is open, but walking is unpleasant in the rain, so skip it this day
- Verkehr Museum: Closed Mondays
- Shimizu Jirocho’s Birthplace: Closed Tuesdays, so open on Monday (weekdays 10:00–16:00)
As this falls at the tail end of the school summer holidays, Dream Plaza may get busy with families from late afternoon. If Sushi Yokocho is crowded at dinnertime, one option is simply to switch to one of the other restaurants in the complex.

5. Events in Shimizu on August 31, 2026

The Shimizu and Shizuoka area is one of Japan’s finest food destinations. Here are the local specialties worth trying on your day in port.

One seasonal delicacy we especially want to highlight for August is shirasu (whitebait).
The shirasu season in Suruga Bay runs from spring through autumn, and summer brings steady catches. “Nama shirasu” (raw whitebait), which can only be served the same day it’s caught, appears in shops depending on the day’s haul.
The local way is to pile the translucent fish over rice and eat it with ginger and soy sauce. Some restaurants serve a two-tone bowl with boiled shirasu on one side and raw on the other. If you spot it at Kashi-no-Ichi or the restaurants in Dream Plaza, take it as proof that the sea was kind that day.

Wi-Fi

- S-PULSE DREAM PLAZA: Free Wi-Fi available
- Convenience stores (7-Eleven, Lawson, FamilyMart): Nationwide free Wi-Fi available
- If you’re staying in Japan for a while, a prepaid SIM purchased at the airport is recommended
Payment Methods
Cash is still the norm at many shops in Japan, and it’s the safest bet at small restaurants and in taxis.
Credit cards are accepted at larger stores in S-PULSE DREAM PLAZA and Kashi-no-Ichi. Visa and Mastercard are the most widely accepted; Amex and Diners are often declined.
Near the port, you can withdraw cash from overseas-issued cards at Seven Bank ATMs inside convenience stores. As a rule of thumb, carrying ¥3,000–¥10,000 in cash per person per day will keep you covered.
IC Transit Cards
Suica, ICOCA, and other IC transit cards work on buses and trains. You can buy them at convenience stores near the port or at Shimizu Station.
You can also pay in cash, but change isn’t always given, so keep some coins handy.
Language Support
The tourist information desks (Shimizu Port Terminal and Shimizu Station) offer English assistance. S-PULSE DREAM PLAZA and Kashi-no-Ichi have English menus and some English-speaking staff.
Mihoshirube, the visitor center at Miho no Matsubara, stocks multilingual pamphlets. Taxi drivers generally speak only Japanese, so Google Translate is your friend.

8. Returning to Your Ship
The Mitsui Ocean Fuji departs at 21:00. Plan to be back at Hinode Pier by 20:30.
It’s a five-minute walk from Dream Plaza to the pier, but the port is dark at night and rain makes footing hard to see. Give yourself a little extra time.
If you get lost, search Google Maps for “Shimizu Port Hinode Pier” or “清水港 日の出埠頭”.
If you take a taxi, telling the driver “Shimizu Port Hinode Pier (清水港 日の出埠頭)” will get you there. Your large cruise ship at berth serves as a landmark, so you’ll spot it as soon as you get near the port.
9. About the Mitsui Ocean Fuji
The Mitsui Ocean Fuji is a 32,477-ton cruise ship operated by MOL Cruises under the “MITSUI OCEAN CRUISES” brand. She measures 198.15 m in length and is registered in Nassau, the Bahamas.
Originally launched in 2009 as the Seabourn Odyssey, she was acquired by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines in 2023 and debuted in December 2024 as a Japan-based cruise ship — a vessel with a track record in the luxury market, now sailing for Japan’s cruise scene.
Her defining feature: all 229 staterooms are suites. She carries just 458 passengers, less than a fifth the capacity of a large cruise ship.
With fewer passengers on board, restaurants and lounges rarely feel crowded and the crew gets to know you. The rhythm of a day in port also feels quite different from ships where thousands disembark at once.
When a small luxury ship like this calls at Shimizu, the port has a quieter atmosphere and disembarkation from the pier goes smoothly.
